The University Top-Up

A university qualification, on top of the learnership.

Graduates who have proven themselves at your front desk can go further — into accredited Wits and Unisa programmes in practice, health and claims administration. We manage the whole thing as a bursary.

How it fits together

Foundation first. Specialisation second.

The order matters. A person who can handle a distressed patient, hold a confidence and follow something through is worth training further. A person who cannot is not made employable by a certificate — which is why the top-up sits after the learnership, not instead of it.

01

The learnership

Twelve accredited months in client relations and practice support — communication, etiquette, service mindset, ethics, medical aid administration at practice level, and real work at a front desk.

02

You decide who goes further

You have watched this person work. Together we identify who has the aptitude and the appetite for a specialist administration track — and who does not.

03

We manage the bursary

Application, registration, tuition and prescribed materials, academic support through the course, and the learner's stipend for its duration. One partner, one agreement, one report.

04

They graduate into your practice

You end up with a practice administrator who has both the university qualification and a year of proven front-desk performance behind it — a combination that is very hard to hire.

The Tracks

Three directions, built from what Wits and Unisa actually offer.

These are real, currently offered short courses and short learning programmes at the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of South Africa. We select from them against the role you are building — and confirm availability, entry requirements and current fees with the institution before anything is committed.

Track One

Practice & health administration

For the person who will run the administrative side of your rooms — health systems, health information and the economics behind medical scheme funding.

  • Wits — Introduction to Health Economics
  • Wits — Health & Healthcare Through an Economic Lens
  • Unisa — Programme in using DHIS2 for Health Management (77031)
  • Unisa — Managing Health & Nutrition in Adverse Conditions (72540)
Track Two

Claims, billing & financial administration

For the person who will own medical aid claims, patient accounts and the money side of the practice — the track that pays for itself fastest.

  • Unisa — Course in Practical Bookkeeping (70904)
  • Unisa — Course in Fundamental Accounting (70866)
  • Unisa — Programme in Credit Management (76812)
  • Unisa — Course in Value Added Tax (70912)
  • Unisa — Programme in Financial Management (71277)
Track Three

Professional communication & governance

For the person who will front your practice, write on its behalf and be trusted with its compliance and confidentiality obligations.

  • Wits — Business Writing
  • Wits — Communicative English
  • Wits — Risk, Compliance & Governance in the Financial Sector
  • Unisa — Programme in Public Administration & Management (76777)

University short-course catalogues are revised every year, and offerings open and close between intakes. Treat the list above as the shape of what is available rather than a fixed menu — we confirm the exact programme, its current fee and its entry requirements with Wits or Unisa at the time of your intake, and put that in writing before you commit to anything.

What a bursary programme means

You fund a place. We do everything else.

Sending a junior employee to university is a project in itself: choosing the right programme, getting them registered before the deadline, paying the institution, buying prescribed material, keeping them studying while they work, and handling the administration when something goes wrong.

That is the part we take. Your practice funds a place and receives a report. Nobody at your front desk has to become a bursary administrator.

Selection and application

The right programme for the role, and the application submitted on time and correctly.

Registration and fees

Tuition and prescribed materials paid to the institution directly, with the receipts on file.

Learner support through the course

Academic support, study structure and mentorship — because a working adult studying part-time drops out without it.

Stipend for the duration

The learner is supported for the length of the course, so studying does not become a reason to leave.

Reporting and administration

Progress, results and spend documented as it happens, in a form your accountant and your verification agency can use.

What it costs

Quoted per learner, per programme — and never guessed at.

The top-up is priced off the institution's actual published tuition and prescribed material fees for the programme you choose, plus our learner support and administration, plus the learner's stipend for the length of the course.

We put that in front of you as a line-by-line quote before you decide anything, and we set out its tax and B-BBEE treatment with your accountant at the same time — bursary spend is treated differently from learnership spend, and the difference is worth understanding before you sign.

A qualification is worth something. A qualification on top of proven character is worth keeping.
